What evidence is there to suggest one legion of the Roman invasion force had
ben in Britain for any period prior to the invasion? Where do you contend
they resided during that time? Surely also if this had been the case
Tacitus or Dio would have made some mention of it?
We know Dio was writing some 60 to 80 years after the event and that Tacitus
wrote within 30 years of the event. How likley is it that both these
authors would have decided that it wasn't required to say one legion was
already in Britain?
It is of course possible and some of the archaeological evidence may now be
lost to erosion of the West Sussex coast line. The only possible argument
for this having occurred is Fishbourne but again there doesn't seem to be
any evidence for the Army there pre AD43 or if there is I have missed this
in all the writings about the palace. There again Fishbourne is one of
those roman remains that are in reality out of context. I dont think anyone
as put forward a convincing argument as to why there would have been a
Palace/very large well to do villa in Chichester and I don't really buy into
the argument that it was built for a client king. Am I wrong in believing
that Chichester was bigger and grander than the Palace discovered in London
back in the 60's by Marsden? If so why?
