Press release on the van dig currently going on at Bristol University.
The 'van dig' is a new departure for archaeologists to refine the
techniques to study a modern artefact. The van was involved in 15 years of archaeological research, and it is hoped that the project will find evidence for its history remaining in the vehicle.
'history remaining in the vehicle' ??
My suspicious mind makes me wonder, looking at the statement above, if there is more to this than meets the eye.
Perhaps Mark and his colleagues have lost an important find from one of their department's digs over the past 15 years and the last time it was seen was when someone had it in the van. So they have managed to surreptitiously re-aquire the old van from Ironbridge, without arousing too much suspicion, under the pretext of academic research to hopefully recover the lost artefact.
Perhaps the RAE funding council want to see evidence of the work they have done and in particular that regarding find that has since gone 'missing'.
