I had thought that when amphorae were being transported on ships they were
laid on their sides so that the points of one row fitted between the
'bellies' of the row beside them. This to stop them rolling around.
However, my cousin-in-law says that there is a display in Barcelona Museum
which shows amphorae being transported upright, with the points sunk in the
ballast.
Can anyone tell me which view is correct?
