Because this model is merely an attempt to explain away the apparent
discrepancies in the data which emerged from a previous study (of Capelli et
al) and that happened to be of Y-chromosomes.
Mark Thomas - the principal author here - had not so long ago proposed a
different (but equally media-attention grabbing) theory, that the obseved
effect was a result of "genocidal ethnic cleansing".
But as you say, its a pity that before such wide-rangin interpretations
(models) are proposed, there is not a better data set assembled.
