Community Archaeology is about the only form of archaeology in North Devon. We are so far removed from the county seat of learning that opportunities are few and far between.
North Devon Archaeological Society has run a 5 year Bronze Age hillside enclosure excavation for the past 5 years, a Fish Weir Project on the Taw and Torridge estuaries, and a landscape survey in the Parracombe area. Ace Archaelogical Society from Winkleigh have run several projects in the last few years.
The Combe Martin Silver Mines Preservation Society have had ongoing training excavations for the last 5 years, and I am just completing a preliminary report for a Community Archaeology Initiative in which locals from various villages in North Devon are investigating an Iron Age hill-fort.
Interestingly, we do not produce grey matter reports, but reports which go into local libraries and the West Country Study Centre. Long may it continue.
