Of course what Nigel failed to mention (and I am sure it was an unfortunate
oversight) was that the PAS explorers section to which he refers .. says
"The sites where early Anglo-Saxons lived have been discovered not only by
excavation, but also by looking carefully on the surface. Archaeologists can
identify these sites by putting together clues from field-walking,
metal-detecting and geophysical survey...."
and shows how different techniques find different things and then how
together they build a fuller picture... ONE of the ways is detecting the
other is field walking ... sounds perfectly logical and sensible to me....
in fact I will be doing exactly that methedology myself in September.
PAS aims are --- for your information
1.. To advance knowledge of the history and archaeology of England and
Wales by systematically recording archaeological objects found by the
2.. To raise awareness among the public of the educational value of
archaeological finds in their context and facilitate research in them.
3.. To increase opportunities for active public involvement in archaeology
and strengthen links between metal-detector users and archaeologists.
4.. To encourage all those who find archaeological objects to make them
available for recording and to promote best practice by finders.
5.. To define the nature and scope of a scheme for recording portable
antiquities in the longer term, to access the likely costs and to identify
resources to enable it to be put into practice.
So try and look at the whole picture Nigel, and let the PAS get on with what
they are good at... I will be supporting them directly very soon. and I
will also be supporting detectorists and I will also be supporting amatuer
archaeologists - as I love to bang on ... Positive steps are what I like
You have perhaps to remove the blinkers that seem to tunnel your
vision...and seem to ensure you get all worked up about nothing really.
