PAS have every remit to liais with the genral public and this is such one
If you had conducted any kind of research at all Nigel you would know that
metal detectors suitable for children have been on sale since the earliest
days of the hobby and are NOT some new phemonemum that Bill Wyman is
Kids have historically and will continue to participate in the hobby of
metal detecting whether you like it, PAS likes or Bill Wyman sticks his name
on a machine or not.
No one I know within the hobby of metal detecting would for one second
accuse the PAS of promoting metal detecting, demonstrably quite the
opposite. However, not to have catered to children in their liasiing would
have been remiss in the extreme.

The suggestion that inserting a fun feature showing the excitement of metal
detecting into the National curriculum Key Stage 2 won’t stimulate an
expansion of the hobby is so unlikely as to be not worth debating.
it is juxtaposed with the appearance of child-friendly detectors, including
Mr Wyman’s that is being made available “in time for Christmas”.
Equally, the idea that PAS will “lead them into practising responsible
detecting” is highly unlikely (how???) since attempts to do this amongst
detectorists have met with such limited success. How many ten year olds
report their finds and by what mechanism?
Currently, PAS is spending £600 per annum for each detectorist that records
with them (and rising) whilst all the other detectorists are recording
nothing. I see no point in making a bad situation worse.
Other than commercial beneficiaries there is nothing to be gained from
converting thousands of kids into detectorists, and much to be lost. And
point remains, PAS have no remit.
