It's summer and today is too hot for poetry
I'd like to write about summer
but it is always too hot when I think about it
like now for example
I'm lying out on the patio
bees hovering in a veil of flowers
that cascade from the hanging baskets
my eyes closed squinting against the sunlight
make it impossible to read or write
so I lie skin warm and soothed
massaged by the moment
lounging inches from the baking flagstones
while the dogs bask in the shade
the mixed smells of floribunda
at their July best combine in some
ancient magic that makes you think
maybe you smelt that somewhere before
it is pleasant
pleasantly warm
pleasantly relaxing
pleasantly familiar
it would take your senses for an hour or two
cause you to move against
the passing of time
make it stand still for a while
as you idle on a summer's day
I'd like to write about summer
I really would
but today is too hot for poetry
