medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

> In Christopher de Hamel's _Medieval Craftsmen: Scribes and Illuminators_
(London: British Museum Press, 1992) there are two illuminations (one on the
front cover, by the man himself, the other plate 28) of Jean Mielot (d. 1472),
scribe and translator to the Dukes of Burgundy, working at a two-level desk:
both show a table with a wooden writing-desk propped on top of it, triangular
in cross-section, and a second, smaller writing-desk above and behind it
(presumably to carry an exemplar),
yes, this was a great technological advance, which allowed for "Multi-Tasking"
on the part of the scribe.
the best of them would train a mouse, in order to move from one desk surface
to the other.
as i said before, that Spoil-Sport Guttenberg put an end to this very
promising technology, by inventing the paperback book, which rendered all this
heavy reading furniture obsolete.
