medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The clericalization of monasticism was a Carolingian development. For example, the synod of Attigny, c.760/2, distinguishes between bishops and abbots who are not bishops. I presume that if an abbot was ordained as a priest or bishop, then he would wear the appropriate clothing. I have no idea when this started to influence the iconography of Benedict and would be interested in hearing what you discover.
