Dear Colleague,
As you will see from the enclosed press release, The Social Care Institute
for Excellence (SCIE) has asked Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) to do some
research into user participation. As I am sure you will know, a lot of
local councils, health trusts and others say they want users to participate
in their services.
The research we are doing will help to find out what sort of user
participation works. We need to know what participation has taken place and
if it has made a positive difference to services.
If your group has been involved in looking at participation which has
actually made a difference to services, we need to hear from you. We want
to know about why things worked well or if they didn't work well, why not.
This is because SCIE has asked us to write a guide to show people how to
make sure user participation works well in future.
Please contact me by email, SMS text, post or telephone if you can help with
any examples.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours,
Linda Laurie,
on behalf of the Sheffield Hallam SCIE 'Demo' Project.

Finding out if people measure how well they are working together.
The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) want to find out how people
check if they are involving service users and carers properly, when they are
working together.
This is called an evaluation or monitoring. Sometimes, without this, it
would be hard to work out if things have got better for people.
SCIE think more people should find out if things are working well or not.
They have asked Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) to help them with this
work.
Report
There is a report called "Has Service User Participation Made a Difference
to Social Care Services". This report looks at how people have been involved
in telling bosses about their needs. It also looks at how bosses have worked
with people to develop and plan new services.
Pete Fleischmann, works for SCIE, his job is to give advice on getting
people involved. He said that SCIE involve people in all parts of the
services and it really makes a difference. But it is sometimes hard to
measure what that difference is. We need find out if it has made things
better for service users and carers.
The people who will be finding things out are called the
Research Team. They will work at the University and will
include service users, carers and staff from Sheffield Hallam
University.
The lead researcher is Professor Mark Doel. He said that this work is really
important. He wants to talk to lots of different people who have found ways
of checking how people are involved. He said we need to share the good ideas
people have with others. This will make sure that things get better for
service users and carers in the future.
The research team want to find good examples of how to monitor or evaluate
the work when people have worked together to develop services.
When the university have found all the good ways people have of working,
they will make a guide that will help others to work in a good way too. This
guide will be used through the internet by lots of different services. They
want to make sure that everyone has a way of monitoring how people involve
service users and carers in their work.
The research team want to hear from people in Wales and Northern Ireland
too. They need to make sure that they asked everyone across the country.
If you have a good way of evaluating or checking how people work with
service users and carers, you can contact Mark Doel.
