it's helpful to read this, Rachel; also thanks to Mike for conveying the news and helping to keep us together on the list.
I've been promising to keep quieter - so a brief message to say Carl and I bumped into each other on the New Ways of Working for Applied Psycholgists (British Psychological Society) stakekolder day last week which was interesting and potentially relevant for community psychology in the UK. Those is Scotland have not missed their chance to have a voice in the consultation process as we understand there is to be a scottish consultation day coming up soon - (no date was given).
Carl and I agreed we would construct a shared message to inform those who are interested - but Carl, I don't have an individual email for you so can't liase!

To all,
I have to say that after reading the recent interactions between Sue M and
others, pretty much in one go, I feel relieved at this news. Despite having
found some of her points quite interesting, and worthy of detailed thought,
I did not appreciate the aggressive and fairly nasty tone of some of her
contributions. As a recent graduate embarking on Community Psychology I am
new to the list so did not know quite what to expect, I was very shocked by
what I read.
When questioning social injustice through discussion I feel it is crucial to
remain open and welcome other points of view, even if they oppose our own
beliefs in some way, this enables growth both personally and professionally.
To become too embroiled in personal experiences, allowing bitterness and
defensiveness to creep in when our views are challenged (as I felt SM was
doing) is unproductive and causes negativity. It can actually deter
others, particularly newcomers, from giving their opinions for fear of being
attacked on a personal level, which is I feel is highly inappropriate and
disrespectful in this context. Pretty ironic as well, considering
everything Community Psychology stands for!
It has reminded me of the importance of mindfulness when relating to others
on every level.
Despite my feelings on this I have decided to stick with the list as I am
enjoying reading the mails and after a year out from studying I am quite
inspired. I look forward to getting involved in future discussions.
Kind Regards,
Rachel Kelly.
