UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEE
Division of Applied Computing, Schools of Design & Life Sciences
RESEARCH ASSISTANT/INTERACTION DESIGNER/DEVELOPER: INTERFACES TO VERY LARGE LIFE SCIENCES DATASETS
(£20,044 - £22,289 per annum/pay award pending)
We require a versatile, creative interactive system designer/ developer to join our EPSRC funded e-science project team ().
The work will involve the investigation of interaction design to enable ease of access by the life sciences community to large collections of images produced by the latest microscopes. These images are often produced in large sets over a period of time and require substantial processing and analysis. We are investigating new interaction design techniques within an existing project, the Open Microscopy Environment. A critical component of this system is a well developed user-interface that facilitates management of the resulting collection, including the results of analyses carried out on images (for more information about the BBSRC and Wellcome Trust funded Open Microscopy Environment project, see (). The designer/developer will be based in the School of Computing and will work with a design ethnographer attached to the project, the life sciences user community and the existing development team at the Wellcome Trust Biocentre in the laboratory of Dr Jason Swedlow.
The successful candidate will work closely with the design ethnographer to seek insights into the scientific expectations of the environment, matching system interfaces to the working practices of scientists. Skills in requirements capture, usability evaluation, prototyping appropriate interfaces and gathering meaningful data about their suitability in a highly iterative environment will be required. The OME is a test bed for developing techniques to assist the production of interaction styles, and interfaces, which are genuinely useful and usable in situations involving large complex datasets in the wider e-science community. The ideal candidate will have at least a good first degree (2:1 or above) in HCI, computer science, interaction design or a related area. The position is offered for 3 years. Part-time/job share will be considered.
