Research Associate Statistician
Social Network Analysis of Adolescent Smoking Behaviour
Cardiff Institute of Society, Health and Ethics
Cardiff University

The Cardiff Institute of Society, Health and Ethics (CISHE) is a collaborative venture between Cardiff University's School of Social Sciences, Law School and School of Medicine (General Practice). CISHE conducts and co-ordinates methodologically innovative multidisciplinary research, with a strong contribution from the social sciences and within the related domains of biomedicine, health services, public health and bioethics. We undertake and facilitate research of international excellence, placing emphasis on tackling health inequalities and ensuring that our research has an impact on policy and practice in Wales and beyond.

Based in the Cardiff Institute of Society, Health and Ethics, you will work on a collaborative research project (with the University of Groningen) funded by the Medical Research Council. The main purpose of the project is to apply recent developments in the dynamic analysis of social networks and behaviour to investigate the relationship between peer influence and smoking behaviour in adolescence, and will involve the secondary analysis of social network data collected thorough the evaluation of A Stop Smoking in Schools Trial (ASSIST).

You should have a higher degree in a relevant discipline (medical or social statistics, health psychology, epidemiology, or statistics). Previous relevant research experience is desirable. You should ideally have knowledge of, or working experience in the field of social network analysis, combined with strong statistical skills. However, candidates with knowledge, experience and postgraduate level training in advanced statistical methods and who can demonstrate a potential to benefit from further specialised training are encouraged to apply for this post. Excellent communication skills, the capacity to work well within a team, and the ability to write clearly are essential.

Vacancy Number: 333

This post is fixed-term for 30 months due to limited external funding.

Salary: £20004-£30002 per annum

Closing date: 7th July, 2006.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Laurence Moore, tel: +44 (0) 29 2087 9609, e-mail: [log in to unmask]
