Thank you for your kind reading Cindy (and Joanna and Judy...)
Where I live, it is the coldest winter on record. Minus seven some days,
very still. The earth is like a tundra. So there have been a large
number of losses of lambs. And that was it. I walk the dog some days,
and the remains are sometimes dragged and eaten by foxes. I stopped to
really look at one, and there it began. The donnee, as Heaney would say.
Annoyingly, the line in usually arrives at 2 or 3am, and I have to rise
and write it down to keep it fresh.
The ewe was in our next paddock. I'll not forget it shortly.
But as ever, the most part is the - for me - physically tangible feeling
of shaping the words, and what I see and hear. And that I try to write
from a vulnerable place, and for someone. And try to see, incrementally,
beyond what I think/believe/feel that I know.
And Cindy - don't be afraid of posting. I'm terrified of saying anything
about other people's work, because I often don't feel at all qualified
to dissect it - but I will post when I am moved. And there is so much
support and constructive criticism from so many people on the list. I
began writing again this year. It has saved me.
(Apart from the dreadful desire to have a cigarette or two while
working. I get nervous, you see...)

Joanna, Thanks - I intend to enjoy it!
Caleb - I'm so dense: it wasn't until collecting my son from school in
our very rural community that I realized the Christ - shepherd - lamb
image - the double meaning with the colloquial (and believable)
expletive of 'Jesus wept' is wonderful.
What was the starting point of this poem for you?
