Dear all,
Just to remind you that June's NRICH website is now live at
www.nrich.maths.org and the mathematical theme is Statistics. This month
is full of enriching delights, whether your students are just beginning
to discover mathematics or are verging towards the expert!
To coincide with one of the big events this month, we have updated the
Football World Cup Simulation
<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=1184&part=index> game
(http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=1184). Simply by
rolling a dice and using their knowledge of probability, your pupils can
be involved in their own classroom-based version of this competition.
If you have no interest whatsoever in football (and do not wish to
encourage any in your class!), do not despair. The site is packed with
many other statistical challenges to entice you. Can your students use
the information in Presenting the Project
<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4922&part=index>
(http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4922) to find out about
different members of a fictitious class? Or perhaps you'd like them to
collect some data of their own? Why not ask them to find out how
everyone in the group gets to school and compare it with the information
in Real Statistics
<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4938&part=index>
(http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4938). Can they offer
any suggestions for the differences?
Going back to the sporting theme, there are several other "active"
problems for your pupils to try. How are they at Archery
<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4891&part=index>
(http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4891)? Can they work
out the settings for the sight that give them the best chance of gaining
a high score? Maybe rowing floats their boat?! Invite them to have a
look at Top Coach
<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4834&part=index>
(http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4834) - they can carry
out some time trials and gather data to help decide on the best training
regime for their rowing crew.
Many of us might associate averages with statistics and this is indeed
the focus of The Mean Problem
<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4956&part=index>
(http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4956). Students can use
the clues to deduce what the four numbers are. For something more
challenging, encourage them to have a look at The Rescaled Map
<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4958&part=index>
(http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4958) which explores
how to scale countries on a map to represent characteristics other than
land area. Averages are picked up again in the Stage 5 problems this
month. PDF
<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4930&part=index>
(http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=4930) asks pupils to
work out not only the mean, but the mode and median of a distribution too.
As usual we look forward to receiving your students' solutions by June
21st.
With best wishes from The NRICH Team.
