medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (26. June) is the feast day of:
Vigilius (d. 405) Vigilius was the son of a Roman family resident in
Trento. After an education at Athens, V. came home and was soon
elected bishop. He was largely responsible for the conversion of the
Trentino and the Italian Tyrol to Christianity. V. went around
preaching in the mountain villages himself. He finally annoyed a
group of peasants so badly (he knocked over a statue of Saturn) that
they stoned him to death.
Maxentius (d. 515) A native of Agde, Maxentius was brought up in a
monastery, got a reputation as a miracle-worker, and fled in an
attempt to escape fame. It didn't work. He entered another
monastery under his new name (originally his name was Adjutor), but
was elected abbot in c. 500. He had a great affinity with birds, a
man who tried to stab him during a raid suffered a paralyzed arm
until M. intervened to restore him, and he was noted for his ascetic
practices.
Anthelm (d. 1178) The Savoyard Anthelm was a secular priest who
became a Carthusian in c. 1137. He played a major role in the
restoration of the Grande Chartreuse after it was largely destroyed
by an avalanche, and was elected prior in 1139. He had a great
reputation for both organizational skills and holiness; his recruits
to the monastic life included his own father and brother. After
twelve years in office, A. tried to resign to live as a hermit, but
was dragged back to the administrative life. In 1163 Pope Alexander
III made him bishop of Belley.
