Dear Colleagues,

Please find below details of a new vacancy at the National Maritime Museum.

Job Description: Collections Terminology Officer - 2 year fixed term contract

Reporting to: Collections Information Manager

Job Purpose:  The Collections Terminology Officer has specific responsibility for investigating, developing and applying the NMM's policy in terminology control for its collections records. 

The post-holder will work closely with colleagues within the Museum and across the sector to develop guidelines for the application of data standards in collections documentation which will underpin the Museum's ambitious collections and public access programmes. 

Main Duties:

*	Investigating current use of collections terminology at the NMM.
*	Liaising with staff across the NMM to establish the future data standards requirements within the organisation.
*	Researching Best Practice in terminology control across the Museum, Libraries and Archives sector.
*	Applying the experience of other relevant institutions to the NMM requirements.
*	Working closely with relevant Collections and Curatorial staff to prioritise areas of collections data for development.
*	Liaising with stakeholders across the Museum to establish their requirements for access to the collections. 
*	Production of guidelines and policies for use of controlled vocabularies in prioritised areas of the collection.
*	Undertaking data cleaning on prioritised authority records.
*	Training colleagues in the use of controlled terminology.

Qualifications and Experience

*	Minimum of five years relevant experience including at least two years experience of applying documentation standards in a museum, library, archive or equivalent environment.
*	Graduate in a relevant subject, preferably a postgraduate in Museum, Archive or Library Studies or equivalent experience.
*	Demonstrable knowledge of Museum documentation and terminology standards.
*	Demonstrable communication skills. Ability to communicate with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
*	Ability to work effectively both as a self-starter and as part of a team.
*	Ability to write detailed reports and guidelines for colleagues with clarity.
*	An interest in the subject areas covered by the NMM would be an advantage.
*	Commitment to achieving access for all to the Museum's collections.
*	Demonstrable experience of using collections management databases in a Museum or similar environment.

Terms and Conditions:

The post holder will work a 41-hour week, core hours Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm with an additional hour to be worked in agreement with line management.
Salary: £20,000 - £25,000
