Dear All,
Apologies for cross-posting.
We have just received the results of our HERA job evaluation exercise at
my institution (which is a small philosophy/theology college that is part of the
University of London - c.1,000 students BA through to PhD).
The results for library and IT staff are pretty bad. All professional library
staff have been informed that their current salaries are higher than the
salary for the role.
In my case, on the old scale (until August 2006) I am at ALC2. In the
new scale this translates to midway in Grade 8. Salaries in Grade 8 range
from 29,715 to 38,772 (from August 2006).
However, the HERA job evaluation process has determined that my role
is actually at Grade 6 - salaries for this grade range from 20,235 to
24.886.
In my case, I am a qualified librarian and a chartered member of CILIP.
I have a number of responsibilities, but mainly I am the Systems Librarian
and Head Cataloguer. Now I am informed that my salary will remain at
the same point for five years, and then - presumably - a salary cut of
nearly 30%. As it is a small institution there is no scope for either promotion
or "development of the role".
I have already informed the college of my intention to appeal against the
grading, but I wonder if anyone has been in the same position and has
any advice that might be of use?
Thank you in advance,
Michael Morgan
