The Geological Survey of Norway seeks a post-doctoral researcher and two
software developers, please see the advertisement below. Please respond
to Prof Trond Torsvik, [log in to unmask] (not to me or to the list)

--------------------------------

The Center for Geodynamics at the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU)

The Center for Geodynamics at the NGU seeks an energetic and highly
motivated post-doctoral researcher and two similarly motivated software
developers to participate in the GPlates project. GPlates is an
international scientific initiative to develop platform-independent
paleogeographic and geodynamic modeling software and devise
international standards for the characterization and classification of
geological features and earth science data. GPlates will attempt to
unify mantle and lithosphere models within newly refined plate motion
reference frames. GPlates is already under way and currently brings
together a large international group of researchers. The software
development centers are at Sydney University led by Prof. R.D. Müller,
Caltech led by Prof. M. Gurnis and the NGU, led by Prof. T.H. Torsvik.
The new positions will be based at NGU, but extended visits to
participating organizations will be an essential part of the programme.

3-year post-doctoral research position
Geophysicist/Geodynamicist

NGU is seeking a dedicated post-doctoral researcher to work with an
international group of researchers in the building of a global set of
large-scale geological features for inclusion in the GPlates database.
This will include participating in synthesising existing interpreted
features as well as the derivation of new interpretations from
geological and geophysical data. We expect the applicant's experience to
include one or more of the following: Regional- to global-scale Mesozoic
to Cenozoic plate tectonic/paleogeographic modeling, dynamic topography
and basin evolution, relative and absolute plate reconstruction methods,
the evolution of passive margins and/or subduction processes. Emphasis
is placed on the feedback between field and laboratory observations and
theoretical modeling. The applicant should have a demonstrated ability
to work within a multidisciplinary environment.

Two 3-year software developer positions
Software/Scientific Programmer

NGU seek two highly skilled enthusiastic and reliable software
developers or scientific programmers. The successful candidates will be
based in Trondheim and work under the broad direction of the GPlates
Project Leaders in Sydney, CalTech and Trondheim. Essential requirements
for the position include: extensive software development skills
including advanced C++ programming skills; a thorough understanding of
exception-safety and in-depth knowledge of the STL; strong
object-oriented analysis, design and programming skills; knowledge of
GoF design patterns and familiarity with UML; ability to communicate
effectively with internal and external clients; excellent written and
verbal communication skills including ability to write clear
well-documented code which conforms to a pre-defined coding standard;
work under broad supervision, exercising significant use of initiative
and judgment in solving problems, and using sound analytical skills and
attention to detail; extensive experience with the development of
medium-scale applications in C++; experience with platform-independent
software development techniques and cross-platform GUI toolkits such as
Qt; several years experience in Linux computing. Applicants must have
relevant qualifications, as well as extensive experience in, software
design and development. Candidates with geo-science background and
strong programming skills will also be considered but preference is
given to candidates who have worked closely with scientists or engineers
in the past.

The Geological Survey of Norway (http://www.ngu.no) is the central
national institution, responsible for knowledge of the bedrock, mineral
resources, quaternary deposits and groundwater resources of mainland
Norway. Its tasks include geological, geophysical and geochemical
mapping, development and maintenance of databases, research, information
activities and advice to governmental bodies. NGU has a staff of 215
(including representatives of 17 nationalities), most of them based in
Trondheim. 60% of the staff are scientists.

The Center for Geodynamics (http://www.geodynamics.no) is a research
Team at NGU with a special commitment to develop new modelling and
visualisation software that will permit researchers to generate 2D and
3D outputs from models that link the fields of plate motions with
lithospheric dynamics and convective processes in the mantle. The Team
is currently in the final application round to become a Center of
Excellence (CoE) in Norway. The CoE aims to quantify and predict Earth
behaviour by mapping past plate motions, studying the underlying
processes that cause plate motions, and investigating the consequences
of plate motions through time for the evolving Earth. The ambitious goal
is to develop a model that explains plate motions quantitatively and
fully dynamically.

NGU encourages applications from female scientists. We can offer a
favourable working environment, unique scientific challenges and good
possibilities for participation in international fora and in further
education programmes. A kindergarten is run by and for NGUs employees.
The positions carry a salary of approximately 400-500,000 NOK, depending
on qualification and experience. The extended appointment of outstanding
post-doctoral researches/software developers will be considered during
the hiring period.

Additional information can be obtained from the Geodynamics Team Leader
Professor Trond H. Torsvik ([log in to unmask]), or Geoscience
Director Morten Smelror ([log in to unmask])

Applications including curriculum vitae and the names and contact
information of three referees, should be sent by email to Personnel
Manager Bente Halvorsen ([log in to unmask]), or by post to The
Geological Survey of Norway, N-7491 Trondheim (Norway) before September
1st 2006 or until qualified personnel have been recruited.
