Agreed, of course. But it's good to remember that it was a very
circumscribed group of men who shaped the landscape--the vast
majority of men, and women, were in most places illiterate or at best
semi-literate. Before the English civil war there were only 24
printing presses in England, and they managed to satisfy the demand.
