Actually, Aged Pensioner, +Proper+ Academicals would make the point that
Japanese smileys (of which there are more than in the West by a factor of
40) read not from left to write but from up to down. ***
I owe this observation to a Japanese high school student who concluded a
long email to me discussing this very issue with the remark:
"Please excuse my English. I am still learning."
Bloody hell, sure put me in my place, that did.
R.
[Oh, he also proffered the observation that the reason why there are more
Japanese smileys than in the West is that Japan is a more structured
[unstated value judgement -- evolved] and hierarchical society, and thus
demands the social and tonal discriminations implied and articulated
therein.
At that point, I crawled under the darkness and pulled it over my head --
some things are more difficult to deal with than fur-balls -- consult VB on
this.

Regards to VB and J. Not necessarily in that order.
*** Although it depends on how you turn your head -- to read a Western
smiley, you have to twist your head to the right and decode it from the top
down.
Whereas Japanese smileys ...
Obvious really when you think on it, but.
Nah?
