Alexander Cordell was one of Wales' most prolific writers, although he
wasn't Welsh. He was born in Sri Lanka and came to Wales to convalesce
during World War II. His grandmother was Welsh and he later lived at
Llanelen and Abergavenny, where he wrote many of his books about the
principality.
This Cordell Country tour uncovers locations which feature in Cordell's epic
story of the coal mining valleys of South Wales - This Sweet & Bitter Earth
- where Toby Davies gets caught up in the Tonypandy Riots of 1910 and the
police occupation of the Rhondda Valley, as well as the tragic Senghenydd
Colliery explosion of 1913.
The tour is a mix of driving and walking. It is recommended that you use OS
Explorer Map 1 66. Route directions are given in BOLD, with key sites
numbered for easy cross reference with the fold-out map.
The tour begins just north of Pontypridd in Trehafod at the Rhondda Heritage
Park (1), signposted off the A 4058. The Park stands on the site of the old
Lewis Merthyr Colliery and provides a fascinating introduction to the coal
industry of the Valley, the central theme of This Sweet & Bitter Earth:
