pardon, je le ferai plus -- c'était un tout petit petit fichier.... --
As for the "big girl", Mary is interesting as the Theotokos, so she has
to be already -- or soon -- a mother.
Ann is the external part of some theological russian dolls (poupées russes),
where Jesus is in the most inside.
Some of my poets of Rouen speak of her as "epouse, mere et fille au grand
roi", things she is simultaneously, even in the womb of her mother.
As to the side of the womb managing a girl of a boy, you'll find it in
Lactantius, de Opificio Dei, cap 13, PL 7, col 53 sq. "quae pars in destrem
retorqueretur masculina est; qua in sinistra foemina"

First, the stern list owner stuff: please don't send attachments to the
list, as it often can cause problems. (Strange, but true.)
Second: Maybe I need new glasses, but while Mary is very much a bambina
(being in the womb of her mother), she appears to me to be simultaneously
very much a big girl. Is it just me? She looks to be a shrunken adult, and
not an infant (or younger) at all.

What a fascinating picture! If you don't mind a question from a confirmed
lurker, why is Mary placed on Anna's side? I very vaguely remember a theory
of conception that assigned space in the womb according to the gender of the
fetus. Is that what is going on here?
Many thanks,

a little picture of Anna bearing Immaculate Mary in her womb: you can see
rays and flames around her. It is a special norman devotion, in the Beaux
Arts Museum of Rouen. Is it possible to have a "more bambina
representation"?
I've made a small jpeg file. If someone wishes a more precise one, I'll
send it off list.
Amitiés,
Denis

Subject: [M-R] The Virgin Mary as a child
I am now beginning to do some research on the devotion to Mary as a child
throughout the world. I hope eventually to get a book contract on it. I
will be looking in particular for places where the devotion has entered the
sphere of popular religion such as the Maria Bambina in Italy and the Divina
Infantita in Mexico. And of course any place a statue of her has become
"miraculous" or a center of a cult. In the history of the Bambina, you can
read it became a custom to give copies as wedding gifts and thus, plus the
religious order who has custody of her, the devotion began to spread. The
one in Mexico comes from some little known apparitions around the mid 1800s.
I am certain the Bambina was not the first place. I do know of some
medieval apparitions of Mary as a child in Spain. And there is a pocket of
devotion to her as a child in Spain and in Chili. If anyone on this list
has a name,
city, statue, apparition, etc. to suggest that I research, I would be most
grateful for the leads.
Father Damian and I had a field day researching the devotion to the Holy
Child Jesus! That little Holy Boy showed up all over the world and in some
amusing and adorable images. Our book about this won't be out until next
fall, although I have a few of the images on my website, annball.com. If
anyone on this list is interested in a particular image of the Christ Child
or the history, etc. I'll be more than happy to send them something -- just
email me offlist at [log in to unmask]
Blessings and happy Mother's Day to those moms on this list.
Ann
