medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I have nothing to offer in the matter of the position of the child Mary in
Anna's womb. Frankly I didn't notice the "off-center" position. But as for
children portrayed as small adults, this is a staple of Romanesque art. It
wasn't until the era of the Gothic Madonna that the Christ child was
portrayed in a somewhat realistic manner and not as a shrunken man.
See: http://www.art-roman.net/autun/autun4.htm for the Flight into Egypt and
the Adoration of the Magi. It is unusual in the Adoration scene that Jesus
is a) haloless and b) grabbing for the gift like a typical kid. But his
physiognomy is that of an adult - more or less.
See: http://www.art-roman.net/orcival/orcival2.htm for the statue of Notre
Dame d'Orcival, a classic Sedes Sapientiae.
These are fairly typical of the times. I've forgotten the dating of the
attached photo of Anna but I believe it was identified as Romanesque in
style.
