medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. May) is the feast day of:
Gordian and Epimachus (d. c. 2500 Roman saints, whose veneration
dates back at least to the fifth century. The two appear to have
been unrelated; a church on the Via Latina was dedicated to
Epimachus, and Gordian was buried there afterwards.
Alphius and companions (d. c. 251) Martyrs of Sicily, martyred at
Lentini. Their cult was popular in Sicily and NE Italy.
Comgall of Bangor (d. 602) Comgall founded the monastery of Bangor,
one of the great abbeys of Ireland, in c. 558. Later legend tells
that he built his community up to three or even four thousand
members, including such greats as Columbanus. When vikings raided
Bangor in 822, they scattered C's relics.
Catald (7th cent.) Catald was an Irish pilgrim who may have become
bishop of Taranto in Italy. His cult was popular in southern Italy,
Sicily, and Malta, after his relics were discovered in 1071.
Nicholas Albergati (blessed) (d. 1443) Nicholas was a Bolognese who
studied law but then became a Carthusian. He served as prior of
several houses, and succeeded in reuniting his divided order. In
1417 N. became bishop of Bologna, where he instituted a far-reaching
reform program. N. also served as papal legate at the Council of
Florence. N's cult was confirmed in 1774.
