medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (31. May) is the feast day of:
The Visitation of the Virgin Mary (1st cent.) Mary's visit to her
cousin Elizabeth, as described in Luke 1: 39-56. The feast was first
instituted by a Franciscan general chapter in 1263. It was first
adopted into the Roman Calendary in the late 14th century; the
Council of Basel ordered its celebration; and it won universal status
in the pontificate of Pius V. The date was changed to 31. May in
1969.
Petronilla (d. c. 251) Petronilla was a Roman martyr. Legend made
her the daughter of St. Peter.
Cantius, Cantianus, and Cantianella (d. 304) Siblings martyred at
Aquileia. Their acta tell that they were of Roman aristocratic
family, raised as Christians by their tutor. When the Great
Persecution broke out, they freed their slaves, sold everything else,
and moved to Aquileia, where their public sacrifice was soon
demanded. They refused and were executed.
James Salomoni (blessed) (d. 1314) James was a Venetian aristocrat
who became a Dominican at age 17. He eventually settled at Forli
where he cared for the sick, prayed a lot, and won a reputation for
ecstasies, prophecy, and miraculous cures of paralytics.
