medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and
culture
Greetings all!
I have a reference to someone arriving in Iceland to collect money "For
= St. Anthony"=20 shortly after 1400. Unfortunately we are not told
WHICH St. Anthony! = The hermit (who might be represented by members of
the Antonine order - I hope = that's what it's called in English, I=B4m
working from German sources) - but St. = Anthony of Padua strikes me as
another possibility. Does anyone know of fund-raising for either of =
these saints going on at about this time?
Thanks in advance,
Meg
Dear Meg,
Licensing of collectors for the hospitals of the Anthonine order are
fairly common in English C15 episcopal registers (I've certainly seen
them in some of the York registers, and have a feeling I've seen them
elsewhere as well) so that would almost certainly be what they were. The
collectors offered an indulgence, the details of which I forget.
