Fully-funded AHRC PhD Project Studentship Available.
“Spectral Geographies of the Visual”.
Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship, funded by the Arts
and Humanities Research Council, on the topic of “Spectral Geographies of the
Visual”. The student will be based in the Department of Geography, University
of Sheffield
The student’s primary supervisor will be Dr John Wylie, and the thesis will form
part of a wider AHRC-funded research project entitled, “Spectral Geographies:
unsettling place and self”. This project has the following objectives:
• To critically interrogate current conceptions of haunting, place, materiality
and subjectivity
• To elaborate innovative understandings of the constitution of place and self
via spectrality.
• To contribute conceptually and subtantively to current geographical and
cultural work on place, subjectivity, embodiment and the visual.
The focus of the PhD thesis will be upon the theorisation and analysis of visual
imagery, and it is therefore appropriate that work be undertaken by someone
with some academic background in this area. While the direction of the thesis
will of course be primarily determined through the student’s independent
research, it is anticipated that a substantial portion of the thesis would be
devoted to a theorisation of the visual as a haunted and haunting medium. This
theorisation could be abetted, for example, by case studies of particular
imaging technologies, and/or archives of notable ‘haunted’ images.
The studentship will cover the cost of tuition fee for home or EU students, plus
an annual maintenance award for home students of £12,300 (Year 1), £12,608
(Year 2), £12, 923 (Year 3). The successful candidate will join a vibrant and
growing postgraduate community in Sheffield. The Department of Geography (5A
RAE 2001) is one of the largest in the UK, and has an international reputation
for its research in social and cultural geographies.
Applicants for this studentship should have a good first degree (at least 2:1 or
equivalent) from any university in geography or a related discipline. An MA,
completed or close to completion, in a cognate area (e.g cultural geography,
visual culture/theory), would be an advantage.
The studentship is tenable for up to three years (full-time), subject to
academic progression. Please note that AHRC regulations restrict the award of
full stipend plus fees to UK candidates who have lived in the UK for three
years prior to the date of application. Candidates from other EU countries may
be eligible for a fees only studentship.
Application Forms are available at:
http://www.shef.ac.uk/apply/research.html, and should be returned to the Depart
of Geography as indicated. The closing date for applications is Friday June
9th.
