medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. April) is the feast day of:
Gerald of Sauve-Majeure (d. 1095) Gerald was born at Corbie and
studied there before becoming a monk. He was miraculously cured of a
long-term illness on a pilgrimage to Rome, and went on to Jerusalem.
On returning to France, he restored Corbie's abbey church, served as
abbot of a monastery near Laon, but gave up because the house wasn't
strict enough, and got together a group of companions to found his
own monastery. This was Sauve-Majeure near Bordeaux. The monks
launched preaching campaigns in the area. He was canonized in 1197.
Juliana of Mount Cornillon (blessed) (d. 1258) Juliana was born near
Liege. She became a nun in 1206 and soon began to have intense
mystical experiences, which took the form of a conviction that she
had been called to win acceptance of a feast day commemorating the
eucharistic sacrament---Corpus Christi. She did this with great
success, despite the fact that her own convent kicked her out for
falsifying accounts and over-strictness. J's cult was approved in
1869.
Eva of Liege (d. 1265) Eva followed Juliana's advice to become a
recluse. The two were close friends, and it's not really clear which
of the two---Eve or Juliana---was really the motive force behind the
Corpus Christi movement. E's cult was approved in 1902.
Vincent Ferrer (d. 1419) The Valencian Vincent Ferrer was half
English and half Spanish. He was a brilliant student who taught
philosophy at the university of Lerida before he was 21 and studied
theology and Hebrew at Toledo, becoming a Dominican part-way through
his academic career. Vincent supported the Avignon popes, but got
over it. Mostly, though, V. was a preacher, active in France, Spain,
and Italy. He was great at inspiring audiences to repentance, and
converted an extraordinary number of Jews in Spain. After his death,
V's cult spread very quickly throughout Europe, and he was canonized
in 1455.
