Poets For Human Rights:
American poet Larry Jaffe will tour the Czech Republic for a month,
beginning with debut appearance at the Thomas Bata University's Literarni
Kveten Poetry Festival in Zlin, May 2-5.
Author of "The Anguish of the Blacksmith's Forge," "L.A. Rhapsody,"
"Unprotected Poetry," and "Jewish Soul Food," Larry Jaffe is also a staunch
human rights advocate. Jaffe served as the International Readings
Coordinator for UNESCO Dialogue among Civilizations through Poetry, and
co-founded Poets for Peace and Poets for Human Rights, which includes member
poets on four continents. He was one of four poets featured in a 2003 indy
film documentary, "Common Language: Poetry and Peace."
"Human Rights on this planet depends on those of us who care and are
courageous enough to do something about it," said Jaffe. "Poets should lead
the way for humanity and break the bonds of slavery and abuse wherever they
may be with our observations and poignant words." His Poets for Human
Rights readings include distributing and reading the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights.
Sandra Rehakova, producer of the Literarni Kveten festival, found this issue
so interesting that she offered to organize a special event for Mr. Jaffe to
make a presentation to students while he is attending the festival in Zlin.
Following Zlin, Larry will travel to Prague and Brno for lectures and
readings at the Jewish Museum, Museum of Czech Literature, the Public
Library and other venues. His tour will end with an appearance at Festival
Trebic Morava on June. 2. Jana Jake¹ová, of JANAJ Arts is Jaffe’s
producer/promoter in the Czech Republic. She has arranged for the
translation of JEWISH SOULFOOD into Czech. Mrs. Jake¹ová is highly motivated
to promote the arts wherever and whenever she can due to her extreme love of
poetry as well as continuing the literary and cultural tradition of Prague.
She is producing Jaffe’s tour because, "I have created and promoted this
tour for Larry because in my estimation he is a poet who exemplifies his
work and fights for the rights of others. He is not the type of poet that
lets things go by and leaves the responsibility to others. He has organized
readings around the world and I wanted him to bring his poetic labors to the
Czech Republic and Prague to promote human rights here and help organize the
Czech poets as well. Larry is a poet in the tradition of Neruda who walks
this earth to help others."
After his tour, Larry's plans include coordinating international Poets for
Human Rights readings for International Human Rights Day on Dec. 10. For
