Hello Joanna. Thanks for your post.
My friend when she arrived assured me that poetry is on the National
Curriculum, so that some teaching of it every term is a legal requirement.
- I will try and be optimistic about this.
Of course, how well it's taught in each school is down to the individual
teachers. She knows of one small rural school in particular where the
headmistress is so keen herself that the basic requirement in poetry
teaching has become quite extraordinary in its range and standard, and the
children produce amazing original work. That school is known all over the
county as 'the poetry school'.
- could you tell me where this is please - email info direct if you like.
We should all be so lucky! Tina, I do hope
your two end up in a poetry-conscious school, but at least they'll be
getting exposure to poetry at home, unlike some.
- I think Alison wrote in a much earlier email that her children see poetry
as something they do at home. I hope my children get a better experience of
poetry 'teaching' than I did but if not I hope that I can ignite some
enthusiasm at home.
