I also discovered references to the Cornish story but (thanks to Jerry
sending me the scan of a page) I read a reference to the miners returning
"their clothes black with coal dust". Since Cornwall had no coal mines, I
presumed that this volume was translated from another work. Of course,
there could be other explanations and if the illustration is the same; that
would be significant. I hope to be in a position to read the German book
before long and will report back.

Actually, if you browse through abebooks.com you will find over 60 copies of
Ballantyne's book. The oldest is from 1868. The same thing comes out of
Main Author: Ballantyne, Robert Michael
Title Details: Deep down: a tale of the Cornish mines / by R.M. Ballantyne
Publisher: London : Nisbet, 1868
The people of the german catalogue GBV (gbv.de) gives 1868 as the year of
Acervo Histórico del Palacio de Minería, Mexico
