medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. April) is the feast day of:
Cronan (d. 665) The Irish Cronan was a monastic founder who
established monasteries at Tullyroe, Lusmagh (Co. Galway), and
Roscrea (Co. Tipperary). His vita dates to the eleventh century.
Cyril of Turov (d. 1182) Cyril was from Turov (in what is now
Belarus). He became a monk, lived as a recluse, became a noted
spiritual advisor, and in 1174 was made bishop of Turov. Twelve of
his sermons are extant, as are 24 prayers, a treatise on the monastic
life, and a penitential. He was noted also as a major biblical
exegete.
Luchesio (blessed) (d. 1260) Luchesio was a Tuscan who, in that
pattern so typical of medieval Italian saints of the male persuasion,
took care of all his sinning at an early age (in L's case with
violent support of the Guelphs and moneylending), and then got
religion when in his 30s. So L. took to visiting the sick and
visiting prisoners and gave away almost all his possessions. When
St. Francis visited town, L. and his wife both joined the Franciscan
third order---according to tradition as the very first members. L.
got so good at the religious life that he is said to have experienced
ecstasies and to have had the gift of healing. L's popular cult was
approved in 1694.
