Cate,
If your tolerance for fictional history extends to historical fiction, if you have patience for very long books, and if you haven't yet read Sigrid Undset, you have a great pleasure in store for you. Her novels are considered to be accurate on Norwegian culture and society in the period before (Gunnar's Daughter - quite short) and following (The Master of Hestviken and Kristin Lavransdatter) conversion to Christianity. The new translation of the last avoids archaic English.

For those of us who read historical mysteries, Susanna Gregory's latest Matthew Bartholomew book is set against the background of Islip's visit to Cambridge.,

I occasionally read historical mysteries - if i can be sure the historical details are accurate! * there is a contributor to this list who writes medieval mysteries * but I can't remember her name * can you?
