medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Jim Bugslag <[log in to unmask]>
> If it were up to me, I'd be tempted to offload the stone somewhere near the
Place Saint-Andre, just behind the cathedral.
now, you know very well that St. Andre ain't "just behind the cathedral", Jim,
it's several hundred yards down the steep hill, on the floor of the valley.
>Not only is the distance to the cathedral shorter
as the crow flies, yes.
but, as i've said previously when this possibility came up, crows are not
noted for their stone-hauling abilities.
> but the scarp is steep enough there that John's suggestion of winching it
up, perhaps on a semi-permanent wooden crane
no possibility of that at all, if you're talking about a crane up by the
cathedral's apse with a reach long enough to raise stones down at St.
Andre's.
that Dog won't Hunt.
>-- or perhaps even on some kind of ramp -- would be possible.
a very, very long "ramp", and a very, very steep one.
today, there are two ways to get directly up the hill from St. Andre's to the
cathedral:
1) a street which goes more or less straight up (though i believe that there
is a bend in it, which would make "ramping" rather dodgie) but which comes
out, not at the cathedral proper, but north of it about a block, outside the
north wall of the cathedral close.
and
b) a very steep stairway which is south of the street, but which has several
twists and turns and thus could hardly be used as a rampway.
>I might even consider locating the masons' lodge at the foot of the
escarpment, for efficiency's sake.
only if the stones came up that way.
which i can't really see any possibility of being the case.
