Known, technically, as a 'transenna'. They are interesting. But they would have
held pieces of glass. Alabaster can be cut in larger sheets, as can be seen (in a
restored version) in the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna (which can be
viewed in an excellent "virtual visit" on the Italian tourist bureau site for the city of
Ravenna). Transennae hearken back to the days before pieces of glass were
leaded together. In the Muslim world, the tradition continued in some fascinating
geometrically inclined ways.
