medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I think this remains to be answered:
>"orationem secundam det episcopus portuensis intra aecclesiam beati petri in
>medio rotae"
>
>Does anyone have any idea what exactly this "rota" in the Church of Saint
>Peter's is?
>
>
it is a porphyry disc in the floor of the nave, often mentioned in
papal/imperial liturgy.
Reinhard Elze, Die Ordines fu"r die Weihe und Kro"nung des Kaisers und
der Kaiserin. Ordines coronationis imperialis (MGH Fontes iuris
germanici antiqui in usum scholarum 9, Hannover 1960) points to
M. Andrieu, La Rota porphyretica de la basilique Vaticane, in: Me'langes
d'Arche'ologie et d'Histoire 66 (1954) 189-218, but a more recent
treatment will be found in.
Sible de Blaauw, Cultus et decor. Liturgia e architettura nella Roma
tardoantica e medievale. Basilica Salvatoris. Sanctae Mariae. Sancti
Petri (Studi e Testi 355 and 356, Citta` del Vaticano 1994).
It may have been re-used in the floor of the new building. There is a
picture of the disc (in a 17th c. setting) e. g. in the exhibition
catalogue Otto der Grosse, Magdeburg und Europa, ed. M. Puhle, vol. 1
(Mainz 2001) p. 471, labelled as a "porphyry disk, probably from
Constantine's St Peter's basilica", and on the same page there is a
drawing of the nave from the time just before its destruction with a
mark for the position of the rota.
yours, h.w.
