medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. April) is the feast day of:
Leonides (d. 202) Leonides was an important Alexandrian Christian, a
married man with seven sons---the eldest of whom was Origen. He was
arrested during the persecution of Septimius Severus and was
beheaded. Church history almost never got Origen's insights and
controversies, because Origen badly wanted to join his father in
martyrdom, and was only restrained by his mother hiding his clothes
so he couldn't leave the house.
Agapitus I (d. 536) Agapitus, the son of an aristocratic Roman
priest, became pope in 535. He was well educated, and planned (with
his friend Cassiodorus) to make a center of study in Rome. But most
of A's 11-month pontificate was spent on an embassy to Constantinople
for the Ostrogothic king of Italy. He didn't prevent Justinian's
invasion of Italy, but did convince the emperor to depose the
Monophysite patriarch of Constantinople.
Theodore of Sykeon (d. 613) Theodore was a Galatian who became a
hermit near his hometown. He got so popular that he retired to the
mountains. He liked living in a cage suspended in a cave. But he
was forcedto accept the position of bishop of Anastasiopolis,
managing to resign after ten years, after which he went back to his
austere and miracle-working life. T. had a particular devotion to
St. George and bears much of the credit for popularizing his cult.
Wolfhelm (d. 1091) Wolfhelm was educated at the Cologne cathedral
school. He started his career as a canon there, but gave it up to
become a monk at St. Maximin, Trier, later moving to St. Pantaleon
(Cologne). He went on to serve as abbot of Gladbach, Siegburg, and
then Brauweiler. W. was a noted theologian, especially active in the
eucharistic controversies of his time.
