Dear Colleague:
I am writing to ask your assistance in identifying promising candidates for
the Johns Hopkins International Urban Fellows Program for the 2006-2007
academic year.
As you may know, the Johns Hopkins International Urban Fellows Program is
designed to create a worldwide network of professionals engaged in the study
of urban policy. It does so by bringing international scholars in urban
policy studies outside of the U.S. to the Hopkins campus each year for a
program of advanced study, research and training; and by convening the
former fellows, incoming fellows, and selected urban experts from around the
world once each year in a host country to share insights about urban policy
innovations. Positions in the program are available at the senior level
(four months) and the junior level (nine months).
We are particularly eager to identify promising and experienced researchers
who could benefit from a semester or academic year of reflection, exposure
to American experience, and immersion in the literature and issues of urban
policy. Successful candidates should have strong interest and a proven
record of accomplishment in the urban policy field, the capability to
conduct independent inquiry into some facet of declining older industrial
cities, and solid fluency in spoken and written English.
The Institute for Policy Studies is generally able to offer at least partial
tuition waivers to meritorious candidates. Because this is a highly
competitive program and funds are limited, applicants must be able to defray
the remaining costs through other sources of funds such as their employer,
foundation grants, or other public or private training grants or
fellowships. Suggestions for such support are noted on our website:
www.jhu.edu/ips/urban/index.html. Note that special funding is available for
researchers and practitioners from Sweden and Italy.
Please let me or Program Director, Marsha R. B. Schachtel ([log in to unmask])
know if you have any questions.
Very truly yours,
Sandra J. Newman
