Hi Jill, I came to Roethke thought this:
'Oh, when she was sad, she cast herself down into such a pure depth,
Even a father could not find her:
Scraping her cheek against straw,
Stirring the clearest water.'
From 'Elegy for Jane'.
I had the collected poems for years, and never looked at them more than twice 'til recently...

Hi Cal,
To run with your metaphor - some are playing cricket and some lawn
bowls, some
the high beam and some the cycling road race. And some are multitalented
(triathletes?). A lot of different games. But all capable of off days, that's
for sure, and brilliance as well.
But the two names you mention have never truly been on my radar, which
is why I
wouldn't be able to speak about them and would have to really persuaded to be
interested in them. Sometimes, it's just a matter of time and timing (like the
said games).
Cheers,
Jill
