Burrow is best known for his book - mongst Mines and Miners - published
1893 - In the introduction to which he describes underground photography as
" this new channel for photographic enterprise" and goes on to say "very
little has been done in this direction so far"
In other words if you are looking for underground photos before 1900 it is
really pioneering stuff with few taking pictures.
Burrow refers to Hughes and Sopwith
Burrow's Slate mine commission was 1895 - His Bristol area pictures were
taken 1905 (he died 1914)
The Royal Institute of Cornwall have many Burrow pictures (inc the original
glass plates for some). There are also pictures in the Cornwall Record
Office. I do not know if they include any from west Devon, but suggest you
contact them.
I believe there was a project underway to catalogue the burrow pictures
John Watton has done more research on Burrow and his pictures than anyone

David

Both surface and underground.
I see your point though about the use of flash underground, although not a
big issue in our area as it's metal mining rather than coal.
Mining in the Tamar Valley was pretty well dead by 1900 athough there were
small scale recovery operations off and on up to the 1970's. So I'm really
thinking of photos between 1851 when the Collodian process was introduced
(this reduced exposure times from millenia to just a few seconds) and the
1970's.
The complexity and relatively high cost of photography up until 1888 would
certainly have an impact, but 1888 marked the year that George Eastman
bought out his 'box' camera to use celluloid film and bought affordable
photography to the masses - so 1888 to 1970's should be awash with photos.
What period are we talking about with J C Burrow?

Lee
