medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. March) is the feast day of:
Eutychius the Patrician and co. (d. 741) A large group of Christians
massacred by Muslim Arabs at Carrhae (upper Mesopotamia, near Urfa).
Matilda (d. 968) Matilda, born in c. 895, was married off to Henry,
the son of Duke Otto of Saxony. Henry became king of Germany in 919,
and of course Matilda was his queen. Matilda had a reputation for
piety, especially after H's death in 936, although she did help her
younger son Henry rebel against her older son, Otto I. She really
seems to have been annoyingly flamboyant in her pieties; after being
reconciled to his brother, the favored son Henry even helped in the
attempt to make her become a nun and stop wasting royal revenues so
much. She founded several monastic houses, including the joint
foundation with her husband of Quedlinburg, that glory of the
Ottonian era.
Eve of Liege (blessed) (d. 1266?) Eve was a "hermit of Liege," says
my source---an anchorite, perhaps? She continued the work of Bl.
Juliana of Cornillon in establishing the feast of Corpus Christi.
E's cult was confirmed in 1902.
