EMERALD ANNOUNCES RESEARCH FUND AWARDS FOR CHINESE AND AFRICAN RESEARCH
Two research grants of up to £6,000
8 March 2006. Emerald Group Publishing has announced new Research Fund
Awards for Chinese and African research. Emerald strives to be community-
minded and, supporting this aim, the research must increase the
effectiveness of the knowledge creation and transmission process. In its
unique Authors’ Charter, Emerald pledges to award to its research
community annual research grants of up to £25,000 from copyright revenues
received from reproduction rights organisations. The awards are supported
by the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society.
The winners of the grants will receive up to £6,000 each and will be among
the first to benefit from the Emerald Research Support Service, which is
designed to help researchers every step of the way with their project by
providing help and resources. The Research Fund Awards were fist bestowed
in 2002. Details and progress of previous winners, as well as submission
details for the 2005-2006 Awards, can all be found at
http://www.emeraldinsight.com/awards
To be eligible, at least one member of each research team must be based in
China or Africa and the applications should address the dissemination of
knowledge for social good with a specific orientation toward benefit for
developing economies.
Mark Hindwell, Head of Stakeholder Relations at Emerald explains
more: “China and Africa are increasingly important regions for research
but all too often that research is under funded and does not receive the
publicity it deserves. Emerald are hoping through these awards to
highlight the excellence of academic work done in Africa and China.”
China accounts for 20% of the world’s population[1] and African nations a
further 12%.[2] The EU sees developing countries and particularly Africa
as key targets for building science and technology knowledge. Its policy
statement on Africa states that "sound scientific and technological
knowledge is indispensable as a basis for strategic and sustainable
development policies and for efficient and effective development
cooperation[3]". Emerald’s Research Funds are aimed at disseminating
knowledge more effectively, key to helping economies to move forward and
to develop the know-how required to achieve sustainable development.
