Dear Emma
We have a very similar policy to that of Nick below. £40 per standard search, plus an additional £20 for each 30 mins of staff time for more complex searches. We also charge all commercial searchers, be they consultants or contractors, but waive this when it was a community/education based project. We do not charge the EA, but would charge contractors working for such organisations. I can't remember an enquiry from a water company, but would charge for these in general principle.
At a recent consultation exercise a couple of contractors said our charges were too expensive, which I thought was rather unrealistic/unreasonable!!

Subject: Re: Charging for SMR/HER Searches
Hi Emma
we charge £60 for a standard search and reserve the right to charge more for complex/large searches - though the exact rate is still being finalised.
We charge everyone who is doing a commercially related search ie contractor or consultant, though we do reserve the right to waive the fees in some circumstances (eg for a contractor involved in an LHI scheme we would normally waive the fee).
We don't normally charge Government Bodies like EA.
We do charge contractors doing work for Government bodies like the EA etc, as it is a commercial inquiry
If a contractor is being uppity about paying, perhaps suggest that they might like to do the work for their client for free if they are concerned about the cost - keep a camera handy and then let us all see the look on their face ; )
best wishes

Dear all,
We have been having some difficulty with a particular company about paying
for HER/SMR searches. We would like to know what other peoples policies are
on charging for a search. We charge commercial companies £40 plus VAT for a
standard search. Does everyone else charge? Who do you charge? Just
archaeological contractors? What about government bodies like The
Environment Agency? Do you charge water companies like Severn Trent? If you
don't charge companies like Severn Trent, do you charge consultancy
companies working on behalf of them, as they are commercial?
Regards,
Emma Hancox
