A link to this document was circulated a while back on HERFORUM. After
careful consideration the Archaeology Data Service (ADS) feels unable to
lend support to the following recommendation
'' We recommend that initiatives are put in place to encourage or
enforce the WKT delivery of all spatial entities resulting from
nationally sponsored heritage projects, and that other archiving bodies,
such as the ADS, both accommodate and recommend WKT as the preferred
standard." (p. 26)
There are a number of reasons for this including
i) The ADS has to be consistent in its recommendations but serves a much
wider community than the focus of the above report
ii) The WKT (Well Known Text) standard is today largely superseded by
the XML-based GML (Geography Markup Language) standard
iii) Virtually all GIS and spatial database vendors support the GML
standard.
iv) The ADS has been reviewing internally its recommendations pertaining
to spatial standards and concluded that GML is the foreseeable future
