4 x Community Researchers
Salary £13.54 per hour
Based Training in Birmingham and /or London; team meetings in
Birmingham and London; field work across study sites in
Haringey, London and Dudley, Birmingham.
The Refugee Council is looking for 4 people with first-hand experience of
refugee communities to work on a research project looking at the experiences
of refugees and asylum seekers in England. The researchers will participate in
a training course and conduct qualitative research with refugees.
Participation will be paid on an hourly basis for a total number of 240 hours,
including training, starting from April 2006 and ending in November 2007.
The ‘Refugees’ Experiences of Integration’ project is a two-year qualitative
research project which will analyse and compare refugees’ experiences of
integration in London and the West Midlands. The project seeks to understand
how location and length of settlement, gender, ethnic/cultural identity, age
and family situation affect refugees’ experiences of integration into British
society.

The community researchers will:
- Set up and carry out face-to-face research interviews
- Assist in the analysis of the research
- Disseminate the research findings, particularly among refugee communities
We will pay for the researchers to receive accredited research methods
training at an undergraduate level from the University of Birmingham, which
will be worth 20 credits. The completion of the training will be recognised
with a certificate of achievement by the University. The 20 credits can be put
towards an undergraduate degree at the University of Birmingham or transferred
to a University of your choice.
We are looking for people with experience of refugee communities. Applicants
should:
- have first-hand experience of the asylum process in the UK
- have experience of working with Refugee Community Organisations (RCOs)
- prepared to attend and complete a six day training course between April and
June (in Birmingham and London)
- be comfortable in expressing themselves in English and in a language spoken
by refugees/asylum seekers.
