DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY AND SOCIOLOGY
UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE, GLASGOW
ESRC QUOTA AWARD
The Department of Geography and Sociology at the University of Strathclyde
in Glasgow has been awarded a Full Time (FT) ESRC quota studentship for
either 1+3 or +3 candidates to begin in October 2006. Applicants are
therefore invited to apply immediately.
Whilst the Department is willing to consider candidates with research
interests in a number of areas of contemporary Human Geography or cognate
disciplines (see http://www.strath.ac.uk/Departments/gs/ for a full list
of staff research interests), it is particularly keen to attract students
who would be interested in fortifying our emerging research focus on
Scotland’s global sense of place and Scotland’s emerging global ethic.
This research cluster aims to serve as a leading fora for debate over the
ethical challenges which confront Scotland given its particular
embroilment in globalisation. Among the substantive areas of concern
which interest us most are :
• Spaces of globalisation and Scotland’s global sense of place
• Moral geographies the local production of Scotland’s global ethic
• Benchmarking Scotland’s global interconnectedness
• Scottish overseas voluntary organisations
• Immigration and asylum policies
• Sustainability, ethics and pollution
• Ethical consumption and commodity flows
• Mullti-nationals and corporate social responsibility and ethics.
The Department was formally instituted in August 2003 and provides an
exciting new environment within which to undertake both a taught masters
and a research degree. It has a strong upward research trajectory and a
mission to foster inter-disciplinary as well as discipline-based research
training and research projects. As part of its expansion, the MSc in
Social Research is one of two new taught Masters courses the Department
has recently launched (the other being the MSc in Human Ecology).
