Dear Community Psych UK members,
In the 'welcome' to this list, a brief note introducing oneself is suggested. So, here goes:
My name is Jacqui Akhurst, and I was excited by my experience of the UK Community Psych conference last October. Having worked for the Higher Education Academy Psychology Network till the end of November last year, I have a sense of the varied nature of community psychology here in the UK, and the pressures that teachers of psychology are under in scientifically-based departments. Since my training, experience and teaching of community psych has been in the South African context (training and working at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg campus), I have an intrinsic interest in community psych. Now that I've moved into a senior lecturer position (with a brief to explore Masters provision) in a developing Psychology team at York St John University College, we've been exploring the potential for taking provision of community psych training further here in the region around York. We've done some preliminary market research, and that, along with the nature of this college (very connected into the local community & various regional intitiatives) seems to indicate that there is the potential for us to think about offering a Masters in Community Psych, probably taking a 'middle of the road' approach, in the medium term (perhaps with a start in 2008/9) - with a potential focus on people already working in a variety of contexts.
I apologise for the lateness of providing the following information, but we have a job vacancy advertised -
see http://www2.yorksj.ac.uk/apps/site/vacancies/view_vacancy_details.asp?Parent_ID=692&Vacancies_ID=202
I look forward to taking part in the discussions on this list.
Best wishes,
Jacqui
