I hope the following will be a positive contribution that will redeem my
sins.....
Might I suggest the following as a draft of a post that would be sent to
the list monthly.
0. The topic of this list is...
1. The subscribers to this list prefer it to be configured as "reply to
list" but this can lead to users accidentally posting personal messages.
Please check the 'To' field of your reply carefully before posting. If
someone makes this error and you would like it to stop, please let them
know _off list_ so they don't accidentally continue the conversation -
if you know the email address of the intended recipient you could cc
them as well so they don't make the same mistake.
2. Stay on thread. Please keep your posting relavant to the subject of
the original thread or start a new thread with a suitable subject line.
3. If you have a vested interest in the topic of your message please
state this clearly. E.g. if you are promoting an organisation that you
belong to make your membership clear, if you are promoting a software
product state your connection with the vendor/developer.
4. If your message is of genuine interest to some subscribers but could
be considered by other subscribers as spam, use keywords in the subject
and first line that will allow their spam filters to delete your message
unread. E.g. 'consultancy', 'commercial', 'vendor', 'advert' etc.
5. If you object to a specific posting to the list please complain to
the original poster and/or the list managers off list. However, if as a
general point you would like these ground rules to change that ought to
be discussed publicly on the list.
Tips:
Most mail clients have filtering options. If you consider mail from this
list to be lower in priority than your personal mail you may like to set
up a filter that moves incoming posts to a separate folder which you can
monitor less frequently.
